My mum always tells me that "Maths is very important, Joseph. You need to study maths hard." But I do not like maths.  Maths is so complicated. This is 2020, we have super-fast computers, we have super smart apps, and we can always use google. Why can't we spend more time on interesting things, like sports, drawing, or learning languages? Why do we need to study maths? I always have this question.

Until one day, my little brother David asked my dad 2 questions. The first question was if zero means nothing why there are numbers smaller than nothing, such as -1. The second question was why there are infinite numbers between 1 and 2. My dad couldn't answer. Then, he searched online. Google couldn’t answer either. This makes me think about maths again. And I begin to notice how necessary it is to study maths. I have four reasons.

Firstly, maths is always around us. It is something deeply rooted in our life. Even for a little child like my brother, he can clearly notice the existence of maths. We count when we were babies. We read the time. We learn problem-solving skills. Especially, we can use maths to tell what a good deal is when shopping.

Secondly, maths is a powerful tool. By using this tool, people can do amazing things. People built great wonders like the Pyramids. People built airplanes flying like birds. People built spaceships to send astronauts to the Moon. Our creativity never stops. Our dream never ends.

Thirdly, maths is related to many other subjects, like arts, physics, writing, technology, and more. For example, we can create impressive art pieces much easier if we understand geometry. The logical thinking used in maths can also help us write clearly articles.

Last but not least, maths is beautiful. 2000 years ago, a great man called Aristotle once said: "the mathematical sciences particularly exhibit order, symmetry, and limitation; and these are the greatest form of the beautiful." Although there are still lots of things we don't know, many mathematicians are working hard on finding new ways of thinking. So, they can help us understand how marvellous the world is.

In the end, I want to answer the question myself. Maths is important indeed. It is fun to discover the charm and beauty of mathematics. We are on the way.
