Do you know what the newest space telescope is? Well, it is the JWST which stands for the James Webb Space Telescope. So far, it has already taken amazing pictures of the universe, which has fascinated the whole world. Do you know how much the JWST program cost? The answer is at least 10 billion US dollars. This sounds like lots of money. Right? Especially just for some pictures. So, is space discovery worth the cost? I think the answer is Yes. And here are my four reasons.
Firstly, space discovery makes us wise. 400 years ago, people believed that the Earth is at the centre of the universe. But now, even kids know that Earth rotates around the sun. We can understand that the sky is no longer the limit, but a start of a new age. We understand that eclipse and meteors are just natural phenomenons. The sun itself is just a tiny dot in the massive universe. There are many super huge stars far far away. Beyond stars, we know the supernovas, the black holes, the galaxies, and the nebulaes.
Secondly, space discovery impacts our everyday life. Although the name sounds like a far far away kingdom, every project starts on Earth at the beginning. Each year, these projects bring us many new and better innovations into our life. Such as quicker communications, more accurate weather forecasting, better home appliances, improved medical technologies and many others. There is no doubt that all of these new technologies are essential for modern life.
Thirdly, space discovery can stimulate young people’s interest in STEM. It fuels our curiosity and imagination. For example, on July 20, 1969, millions of people gathered around their televisions to watch the moon landing. By watching that event, many kids at that time had been motivated to work towards their dreams.
Last but not least, I have two questions here. Are you a fan of Star Wars or Star Trek? Have you ever dreamed about inter-planet trips? I believe that if there is a dream, there is a way. It is something like the Wright brothers inventing the first airplane. Advances in space discovery will turn today’s dreams into tomorrow’s reality.
Therefore, for the above reasons, I welcome the development of space discovery. Advances in space discovery have brought us many opportunities. The sky is no longer the limitation, but our imagination is.
